Works from "Soothe" series, 2014
These works usually begin emotionally; a response to a situation or mood. The first gestures are often tight and knotted. They are followed by a series of repetitive and concentric lines. This meditative line-work, following the more hurried initial strokes, provides a visual and emotional counterpoint to one another.
In past works Elise has depicted her love of patterns and fluid movements with very controlled results, but now she finds herself intrigued by the elements disrupting that flow. These pieces are abstract depictions of the emotional and physical interruptions of domestic life. Through this series Elise is learning to accept and examine the results of that kind of interruption (the noise, the clutter, the chaos) as a means to disrupting and breaking apart the systems in her painterly process.
